The word Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) combines two Japanese words – Rei, which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki, which is "life force energy". So Reiki is literally translated as "spiritually guided life force energy."
Reiki is not a religion, nor is it associated with any particular religion. There is nothing that you must learn or believe in order to receive its benefits.
It is recommended that Reiki practitioners live by a code of ethics, one that all human beings could benefit by practicing—

Reiki is perfectly safe, gentle and non-invasive. It promotes relaxation and helps your body to balance its energy, thereby implementing its natural ability to heal itself. When our energy flow is constricted in any particular area of the body, it can cause illness in that area.
Reiki treats the whole person—body, mind and spirit, balancing the energy, and is complementary to any medical treatment. It can not interfere with any medical treatment, therapy or medication.
Quite the opposite-- it can help to alleviate side effects from medications or treatments. In fact, Reiki is becoming more and more mainstream, being used in hospitals and nursing homes alongside traditional therapies.
Reiki can do no harm, and there is no such thing as “too much” Reiki.
During a Reiki treatment, one may either sit in a chair or lie down, fully clothed.
Reiki is then administered by the laying on of hands, or it may be done by passing the hands a few inches above the body. Reiki may also be sent long-distance upon request.
Full sessions last approximately 45-60 minutes.
